Pitigliano – the city carved into the tuff
For a trip out of town while staying at Residence Park Solemaremma you can visit Pitigliano, considered as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and awarded the Orange Flag.
Little Jerusalem
Perched on a tuff cliff overlooking the valleys of Maremma, Pitigliano boasts ancient roots. According to legend, it was founded by two young Romans, Petilio and Celiano, and the name Pitilgliano actually seems to come from their names. With the Etruscans, the town took the characteristics that still make it unique today, with the famous Vie Cave, ancient streets carved by hand into the tuff, and the fascinating necropolis.
Pitigliano is also known as Little Jerusalem thanks to a large Jewish community dating back to the 17th century.
In the old town centre you can find palaces and historic buildings like Palazzo Orsini, the local ruling family’s residence, the Medici Aqueduct and the Archaeological Museum of the Etruscan civilization.
