RESIDENCE PARK SOLEMAREMMA – TERRITORY
What to see in Grosseto?
Grosseto, the provincial capital, is the largest city in Maremma. 2900 meters of hexagonal-shaped walls enclose the old town centre, which preserves the typical aspect of a medieval village. The city began to develop around 935 A.D., after the nearby city of Roselle had been destroyed by the Saracens. In the 11th century it became a fief of the Aldobrandeschi family, passing under the control of Siena, until Cosimo de ‘Medici took power. The Florentine family gave impetus to the city and built the walls that still characterize it today. With the arrival of the Lorena Family the reclamation of Maremma’s marshy lands began.
Grosseto
Grosseto is bathed by the river Ombrone and is only 14 kilometers far from the sea. The nearest town is Marina di Grosseto with its new marina. Besides the monuments of the town centre and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the nearby Regional Park of Maremma is also worth a visit: it protects a 20-km strip of wild land along the coast which boasts a great variety of environments: the typical Mediterranean scrub blends with pine forests and the Uccellina Mountains, covered with holm oak woods that hide evocative ruins, and the Archaeological Area of Roselle, an ancient Etruscan settlement.
