One of
the most protected and important areas of Tuscany,
famous for its mild climate, the Uccellina
mountains, and its famous cattle, the cows of Maremma. The Park
protects a wide strip of wildlife which follows the coast for 20
kilometres and which presents a wide
variety of ecosystems: the typical Mediterranean
scrub gives way to pine forests
and the Uccellina mountains,
covered with holm-oak trees and alive with interesting artifacts.
The coast presents sandy beaches, marshes and cliffs. The park has
an entrance fee and is carefully supervised in order to preserve
the large number of animals which inhabit it. Visitors must remain
on marked paths when not accompanied by a guide.
It is advisable to visit the park in autumn or spring. |

On the hills behind Castiglione
della Pescaia, less than 30 km. from this small
town, one can find this ancient village of Etruscan
origin, largely rivisited in Roman and Medieval times, with its
arches and narrow alleys which wind themselves inside the walls.
Not far from the village is the Etruscan
Necropolis, which, along the Via
dei Sepolcri, houses important monumental tombs.
The most known are the tombs of the “Petrera"
and the "Diavolino",
but around them are numerous burial sites which testify the vastness
of this ancient necropolis. In the village, The Civic
Archeological Museum Isidoro Falchi, opened in
2000, which presents a wide collection of artifacts, is worth
a visit.

A picturesque
medieval village which lies on an ancient Roman
base constitutes the edge of Maremma. The coast lies only a few
kilometres away and it presents a jagged profile, made up of small
inlays, hills and sandy beaches.
Just a few kilometres from the villlage, in Garavicchio,
you will find the Giardino dei Tarocchi,
ambitious project, entirely self-funded by the artist Niki
de Saint Phalle. Dozens of sculptures
and small buildings,
covered in glass,
mirror and ceramic tiles,
lie amidst the olive and oak trees. It is a work of art unlike any
other in Italy, inspired by the works of the spanish artist Salvatore
Dalì.

Castiglione,
ancient seaside village, between Punta
Ala and the Maremma
Park ows its origins to the Etruscans
who made it a central coastal town known up to the Middle Ages.
The old part of the town is up on a hillside and it offers wonderful
views on the sea below and on the Isola
d’Elba. Nearby are many beaches or a variety
of lovely walks to embark upon especially in springtime.
From the turistic harbour, thanks to a very efficient ferry service,
it is possibile to reach some of the seven Tuscan islands (Elba,
Capraia, Gorgona,
Pianosa, Montecristo,
Giglio, Giannutri)
which have now become a National Park.

Castiglione
is less than 100 km. from the famous spa
Terme di Saturnia, one of the most unique locations
of all of central Italy. The warm
sulphurous waters which spring from underground
have healing and relaxing
properties. It is possibile to enter the private
spa facilities upon payment, or there is free access to some spa
pools, where the famous waterfalls are located. The best time to
visit this area is from march to october.
Around Saturnia, within
a 20 km. radius, are some of the most interesting villages of the
Tuscan hinterland, such as Semproniano,
Pitigliano e Manciano.

One of
the most beautiful and historically rich cities of all of Tuscany
is only 70 km. from
Castiglione della Pescaia.
Built on the hills which surround the whole countryside, it boasts
a wonderful medieval historical centre,
made up of small alleys and ancient palaces. One of the jewels of
the city is Piazza del Campo,
where the Palio di Siena takes
place, the world famous horse race between the different city quarters.
The race takes place twice a year, on
July 2nd, and August
16th, and it is probably one of the most ancient
and intriguing popular traditions of Siena,
very much loved by all its citizens. |

From the
genius of the eclectic artist Daniel
Spoerri, opened at the beginnning of the 90s, this
is a huge open-air sculpture exposition in the town of Seggiano,
near the protected area of Monte Amiata.
Scattered over 16 acres are 79 works
of art, by 40 contemporary european
artists, often very different in nature. The garden
has been open to the pubblic since 1997 and it can be visited between
Easter and October.
It is only 70 km.
from Castiglione della Pescaia
but the winding road makes the car trip over an hour long. |

Another
extremely famous hisorical city of Tuscany
only 100 km. from Castiglione. In Medieval
times it was a marittime republic and it extended
its dominion over most of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The richness and the
prestige of those times have left a mark on most of the ancient
town. Extremely famous is the Leaning
Tower of Pisa, in Piazza
dei Miracoli, as also the Duomo
and the Battistero.
Very close to the city, towards the seaside is the Tenuta
di San Rossore, once a
royal hunting ground, now a large
protected area made up of beaches and woodland. |

The regional
capital hardly needs a presentation. Keep in mind
that one day is not enough to even get a vague idea of the many
wonderful sites the city has to offer. Florence was home to artists
and writers such as Dante,
Giotto, Brunelleschi
and Michelangelo who
all contributed to the city’s fame with their incredibile
works of art. The historical centre houses among other things, Giotto’s
Bell Tower, the Church
of Santa Maria Novella, the Duomo,
the Battistero, besides
the amazing Galleria degli Uffizzi.
The climate is mild and the surrounding
countryside particularly picturesque.Florence is
200 km. away from Castiglione della Pescaia.
